there are loads of ways, personally i use a program called xwd (go google...) but there are loads. you might prefer to use Gimp to do it.

Perhaps the easiest way for you would be to select kSnapshot from the graphics menu (or enter ksnapshot in a terminal)

well what if you don't use KDE? there is more than one desktop in the world....

I'm pretty sure most WM's have some sort of app that let you do that. I know at least KDE and Gnome do, and they're the most heavily used anyways.
