As a matter of fact, it just allowed me to accurately solve a new Linux users issue. They didn't state their distro in the post, but by looking at the icon I could clearly define where and how to fix the problem in only 3 clicks.
My uneducated guess is that it might be better to train new users to state their distribution in their profile.
How does the LQ recognize a distro? I'm using Slackware 13 and my posts are not recognized as posted under Slackware. Nevertheless I saw that others Slackware posts are marked properly.
This feature is pretty cool! (I'm about to find out whether it'll work for me now, I guess.) But considering that there could potentially be users coping with Vista, it might be better if people have the option to disable it...
Speaking of Vista, check out the new direction Wolvix is thinking of taking to compete with Windows! http://wolvix.org/article.php?id=24. It might just work yet!

Hi! This is my first post here, but I receive LQ Community Bulletin.
Pretty cool feature, in my opinion.
Of course, the option to hide this information is good because of privacy.
Anyway, good job!

Coincidentally, just last night I went to the Wolvix site to see if it might be a decent OS for my roommate, to get away from Win. I didn't come across that newsflash, but I say, that's definitely funny!!
Perhaps it might be a good idea to post a link to that news page, somewhere else around here, like maybe in /General, so others can enjoy it and comment on it, without further cluttering this thread.
We seem to be having a hard time keeping some of the current S&F threads on topic, but let's keep trying
Cheers!

Why should Win logos be suppressed any more than Thiz* logos? Is there some shame in them? -- I think one or 2 of 15k+ post mods have to use XP or even Vista at work. If anyone feels some misplaced shame in having a Win logo by his/her post, then:
convert to Linux,
run Linux in a VM,
wait to post from a Linux box,
learn to trick the browser into posing as Linux,
or (& I hope not) don't post.
I think the # of posts from Win boxen is both interesting & a reality check.
*Thiz Notes
Thiz is the worst distro it has ever been my misfortune to encounter: 4 or 5 years ago an acquaintance bought a linux box from Fry's. The distro was Thiz, & it was so bad that he gave me the box -- delivered from across Houston to my doorstep. I fought w/ it through about 3 re-installs before I gave up & made it MEPIS only. At the time I would rather have had W2k than Thiz.
Distribution: Debian, Red Hat, Slackware, Fedora, Ubuntu

archtoad6,
My thinking was that since this feature was added in the hopes of helping to debug issues where the distribution was not stated in the post, showing non-Linux post icons _could_ be seen as a bit superfluous (although they could also be seen as adding a small bit of information to the mix). The idea was definitely not shame-related.

I'm certainly not ashamed that I also use Windows. My thinking was that if you're trying to help save some poor, unfortunate soul from giving up on Linux, it might seem a bit hypocritical to the OP if you are posting from a Win machine, but I seem to be alone in that corner. And now that you've said this:

I wonder if it might help break the myth that all Linux users are zealots.
Hey Why it doesn't recognize my Slackware ? I also want to be recognized
I believe it is because of Slackware power: security and anonymity...
And I'm just curious how does the feature work

Personally, I find that logo offensive. And no, I don't go around bragging about using that software. I actually found out about the testing of this feature when I was on a public computer and saw that horrid logo on my post.

In my case, not a matter of learning but a case of remembering. Or changing the default on my CD that I use to try to turn the usage of that alternate OS into something halfway civilized.

That would be the other option. Because the "waiting" option doesn't really work. The posts from MS machines are taking advantage of a current situation. If it is postponed, then it just represents other posting that doesn't happen.
However, I find the solution of disabling the feature for my account perfectly acceptable.
