Neophyte seeking guruship

I have wanted to learn Linux for quite awhile. I finally had the good fortune to recieve a second computer to install Ubuntu on and here begins the adventure and the parting of the ways for me and Microsoft.

Interesting thing about me. I have a tendency to overlook the small things for a week or so and then think of them. They usually solve the problem.

What should I learn first? To give a little background, I just installed a PCI wifi card from Belkin (FD57000 ver 5.1) and some extra RAM. I can use the gnome desktop environs pretty well and am not scared of the command line. So that being said, where do I start?

Just some quick advice would be to learn the package management system. This really shouldn't take too long. Ubuntu has synaptic which is great for guiness, but learning apt-get from the command line is definitely worth it. Mostly from a "What do you do when X breaks" standpoint. Also the dpkg command is good to learn. It's always nice to be able to find out what is installed on your system from the command line, and what files are installed with a given package.

Once you're familiar with the package management system I'd recommend brushing up on the filesystem. Just learning where things are and where they should go really helped me in the early days.

Good luck, and remember if you get stuck places like this forum and ubuntu's forums are great to find help.

Get a grasp of good search techniques - especially important with Linux.
Post from today - here has some handy links.

Actually playing with Linux is the best teacher I found. As for the Ubuntu forums, maybe you registered with the wrong email address. I did that with Arch - quick email to the mods rectified it.
