Just inherited admin responsibilities on some Ubuntu servers

I have played around in several *nix environments for many years, but have done most of my work in Windows (pardon my French ). Recently I have inherited main admin duties on a group of Ubuntu servers and will be asking many questions as I get used to my new environment.

I have two pairs of servers that I want to configure in a hot-spare, fail-over configuration and a fifth server for general admin functions, like monitoring and manipulating the other four.

Thanks in advance for putting up with my many newbie questions.

Welcome to LQ ...

These are production servers I suppose? Something you should do very quickly is set up some testbed servers (as virtual machines say) to get a feel for installation decisions. And to try out changes.

I found a couple of old, decommissioned servers running SUSE. I am going to install them back in the rack this week, install Ubuntu, and set up a test pair on which to play and learn. Thank you.
