Every journey starts with a first step

Well, I suppose it isn't quite a first step, as I did install Ubuntu on an old machine - it worked first time, but was usable, though a bit slow (that was down to the hardware). I got lazy though, and reverted to my new PC running XP, partly because I needed a modem, and the type I had wasn't supported by Linux.

I decided to try again, though, as like many before me, I'm looking for a real alternative to that other operating system. Let's hope the journey doesn't have too many steps before it becomes rewarding.
