Question WPA+WMP54gs+Ubuntu=total newb pulling hair out!!

Alright, I have a newly installed ubuntu. I have done nothing but try to get the wireless card to work. I am on a desktop(dual booting XP) so, I really can't bring it to the internet. So, the question is, using ubuntu, and a 512meg usb drive, how do I go about getting this thing installed? I have tried to install ndswrapper, but, I guess I'm doing something wrong because it isn't working... It keeps saying the directory isn't there. I'm logged in as the admin account, so, that I don't think is the problem. I also have WPA on my router, so, if I could get that to work with ubuntu, that would be awsum!!! Thnx for your help guys(I know you guys will help). Remember, I know almost nothing about linux so, plz go step by step(how to install and all that stuff).

Once again, thnx a ton!!!!

Edit-New problem see post # 4

Can't help you with ndiswrapper in general as I don't have any wireless NIC's that don't support Linux natively. But this is what I would do:

Turn off WPA from the router. Use it without encryption. Then, when you actually have managed to make the connection, re-enable WPA. It's always easier to solve one problem at a time rather than several. Then, if your laptop has an ethernet adapter, connect it the net using it, not the wlan. It's good to have an internet connection handy.

I'd also post another message, with the exact steps you've taken so far, and the _exact_ error messages you get. This way people can see - hopefully at glance - what's wrong.

You might want to take a look at my page and couple of sites for reference:

http://users.utu.fi/sjsepp/atheros_ap/atheros_ap.html (maybe of some use)
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/ (youve probably been here already)
http://linux-laptop.net
http://www.tuxmobil.org

Check if your laptop is listed on the last two.

Thing is, I'm on a desktop, so, moving it isn't really an option(cable downstairs, not upstairs)....

Here is what I do
go to network
choose my wireless card
hit activate
hit ok
try to get online via FF, and can't

I'm not getting errors, so, idk what to do....

I am routing my internet through my lappy(XP) to my ubuntu desktop(how I got ndiswrapper to work). Problem now is below.

Quote:
root@Elliot-Linux:~# ndiswrapper -i WMP54GS.inf Installing wmp54gs
couldn't copy WMP54GS.inf at /usr/sbin/ndiswrapper line 135.
So, I try installing my driver, and that is what I get.

Edit: got the right driver, now what?
