WLAN with Agere Chipset Motorola USB 11b on Redhat 9

i am a relative n00b to linux and have been trying to set up this wireless network for some months now. I can get it to work when the linux machiene is directly connected with te router, but when i do, i get to poor of a connection (bad cable lines in this room) for the signal to reach some of the other windows computers. So far, i havent even been able to get an LED to light up on my wlan card, so any help would be much apreciated.
