wireless nic in Gentoo

Ok i got ndiswrapper succesfully installed with the correct drivers. I ran iwconfig and all the information there is correct. the problem is i cannot get the nic to actually connect. I tried ifup wlan0 and it tell me ifup is an unknown command so then i try ifconfig wlan0 up and it is like this:

Code:
GentooCoag root # ifconfig wlan0 up
GentooCoag root #
so i assume it works so i test it by doing emerge irssi and it errors and tells me it cant download so my card isnt connected. what can i do to get my card up?

*MONDO* way cool that you fixed this yourself !

Also, *THANK* YOU* for that info -- I'll be dealing with this same issue in the next few weeks on ~~new lappy,

Thank you, and I'm clicking the 'thanks' button.

ps: fellow Gentoo user!
