I've used Linux for 10+ years, but I'm a total wireless noob.
I want to buy a USB wireless adapter (either g or b, never mind the speed
penalty) with a Prism chipset, so I can use the prism54 module that is in the kernel source (2.6.21.5).
This will be mainly a learning experience, so I'm looking for cheap.
I know that my USB flash drive uses the usb_storage and sd_mod modules. What
module(s)--if any--will the USB LAN adapter need to have, beside prism54?

Not sure if prism54 supports USB. Only thought the module handled PCI or PCMCIA.
I think there was talk a while back about using Conexant on prism54 chipsets in USB.
This might of help if not needing prism54. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...dapter-595554/
Wished the Op would have provided more info.
I always had good luck using atheros based WiFi NIC's. MadWifi puts out good source and has excellent documentation and community support. However, NO SUPPORT for USB based WiFI NIC's. I have yet to find a good USB WiFi adapter that supports promiscuous and monitor modes not to mention the all important packet injection! So if you're just looking to get online, yea I'm sure you can find an adapter that will work... if nothing else with ndiswrapper.. but if you want something that is feature rich encase you ever decide to do some WiFi experimentation, get a PCI/ExpressCard/PCMCIA device.
Thanks for the replies. On further thought, and with your replies in mind, I've decided to abandon my USB plans and go with a PCI card. Now, which one to choose... :-)

Search through the HCL section here at the top and to the right. See what is in there and what you can get. If needing monitor mode support then Atheros based nics would be the best choice. Or find older cards say on Ebay.
