Ubuntu 10.10 on Dell Latitude 5100 - Broadcom BCM4309 drivers not working
Hi everybody.
My problem is that on my laptop, I cannot get my wireless to function. I used jockey to get the drivers I needed (which was the whole fwcutter thing) but even though jockey reports the driver is activated and in use, the NetworkManager applet still reports "device not ready (firmware missing)"
I had done this before, it didn't work
then I followed a guide to use ndiswrapper, that didn't work either, but I have reinstalled ubuntu (since I messed things up a little, and it was only a test before I shrank my other partition more) so I want to know if anyone can assist with this, so that I don't make a mistake in case I had the first time around
lspci -nn output:
I'd have a look in your log files (/var/log) and see if b43 is complaining about something. I'm not familiar with jockey, but I suspect it hasn't done something right and hopefully the log files will clear that up a bit more.
Well, thanks, I looked up some stuff, found it was using the wrong firmware, I found a link in the logs, and it turns out, my chips not supported (according the the 14e4:XXXX but something else on the page says differently) If I use the wl driver (by broadcom) it doesn't work, and if I follow their instructions to unload ssb, it kills my wired connection as well
Thanks for the advice! I'll keep it in mind from now on.
I guess I'm a touch confused by your answer..... Did the new firmware work? The wl driver certainly won't work on a 4309, and if b43 isn't either, you may need to resort to ndiswrapper.
Sorry about the confusion, the firmware did not work, my card is currently unsupported, and when I tried to use NDIS wrapper last time, I had the same issue, NetworkManager applet displayed "firmware missing"

I suspect that you didn't blacklist b43 when you installed ndiswrapper, so both were loading and NetworkManager was seeing the b43 driver. If you install ndiswrapper and don't blacklist b43, you can get lots of funky behavior.
