Before I start, I'd just like to say that I am completely new to Linux so go easy on me...
Bought myself a laptop - fedora 7 installed pretty much no problems.
Wireless networking however is a problem.
The inbuilt network adapter appears when listing "lsusb" and shows the chipset to be a Ralink 2573. All good so far, it seems Ralink encourage linux and a whole website is dedicated to providing drivers. Downloading the dailies is possible but I can't "make" them - it returns an error saying "/lib/modules/[kernel version]/build does not exist" (or something very similar along those lines, not got the laptop with me at this precise moment) but the "build" directory does exist dammit! So I can't compile the new daily!?!?!?
Apparently however the support for the wireless chipset is already in the kernel, I've found the .ko file (rt73usb.ko) and done a "modprobe" on it. "lsmod" displays the module running, and with it's dependants also installed.
iwconfig shows a wlan0 adapter but trying to scan with this isn't possible - just says "Network not started". (The "network" service is enabled and runs for all levels).
Followed a tutorial and wrote a config file with a static IP for boot, but the wlan0 fails in boot with an "input/output" error. I'm guessing that the driver needs to be updated with the latest daily, however I can't "make" it! Am I doing something hideously wrong?
ARRRRG.
Keen not to let this beat me as I'd like to learn much much more about Linux. Cheers
