Greetings everyone,
I am having a problem with a D-Link DWL-G510. This card has the Atheros chipset. I am trying to use it in Slackware 11 but can't seem to get it completely working. I have installed ndiswrapper and it reports the driver is installed and the hardware is present.
Running iwlist scan, it correctly shows my local network ESSID, channel and so on. When I run dhcpcd, it does not obtain an IP address. Once I go into KDE and run the KWIFImanager and click scan for networks, it shows my network in the results, but the button to switch to that network is greyed out.
I feel like I'm missing one small step, but cant figure out what that step might be. I've searched for and read threads here, along with using google, but can't seem to figure out what's missing. Any help in sorting this out would be greatly appreciated. If I need to provide more info than what I have, let me know and I'll provide it.
Thanks!
KP
I'd use the MadWiFi driver instead of ndiswrapper. (Actually, I do use MadWiFi with my Atheros card - with Slack 11.) Works great.
What is the output of iwconfig wlan0? It should show whether or not you're associated with the wireless network - a prerequisite for obtaining an IP address.
Hi 2Gnu,
Thanks for the reply! I'll give the MadWiFi a try. I took a look at it last night and, hate to admit it, but I couldn't figure out getting it installed correctly. I'll work on it some more tonight. Been down with a sinus infection, so my feeble brain probably wasn't totally getting what I was reading then.
As far as your questions go: I only get a response with the iwconfig wlan0 after I type modprobe ndiswrapper, as it isn't loading when I boot up automatically. After running modprobe and then running iwconfig wlan0 I get:
I use WPA encryption (have a D-Link DI 624 router). I have tried to enter the encryption and other info via iwconfig, but to no avail.
I'll re-download MadWiFi again tonight and see if I can use that. I read other places too that it is a better choice for this card than ndiswrapper. I'll report back when I have tried this.
Thanks!!!
KP
Ok, when I run modprobe ath_pci after make and make install in the madwifi folder I get this output:
Code:

When I type iwconfig wlan0 I get:
Code:

Frankly, this is difficult for a newb. I don't get about 3/4 of what I'm reading on this particular problem, but I am willing to learn. Just don't understand what it is I'm reading here.
Thanks!

Ok, it's up and running now and working quite well using MadWiFi and WEP. My only problem now is, I haven't quite figured out how to get it to automatically come up and acquire an IP address, etc, on boot up. I would like it to that without having to start KDE and using KWiFi. Other than that, it's running great. I've searched and read some about it, but most of the things I've seen have been clear as mud to someone just getting started in Linux.
