Cisco Aironet 340 Series Wireless card is detected but not working in RedHat 9

I have a Cisco Aironet 340 Series wireless card that seems to be detected by RedHat 9, but I cannot get it to work. When I do a 'lsmod' I can see aironet and aironet_cs listed as loaded modules and the green light on the card blinks. However, when I try to bring up the card using 'ifup ifcfg-eth1', the card fails to get an ip address. I have tried with and without a key, but the results are the same; I cannot get an ip address. I have also tried statically assigning an ip address, but I cannot ping anything on my network. I have verified SSID and the channel are correct.

Has anyone else had trouble with this card or any other supposedly-supported wireless card? Is there something I need to set or adjust?

Thanks!

The problem seems to lie in the fact that you are dumb. if you get that straightened out, you might get your card working.

Don't know if the 340 has the same issues as the 350, but see my post yesterday on the latter.
I had to regress the firmware level to get a 350 to work with RH9. On a dual boot laptop I had updated the ACU client under windows, and this also updated the firmware.
There was no Linux support for this new code. Re-installing the old firmware fixed the issue. Still worked on Windows, but some new features, which I didn't need, were unavailable.

i can give you a hint, i have one cisco pcm-352 wireless card, and it cannot be detected correctly by red linux 9 if i use the newest firmware with this card, i restore the firmware back to 4.25.30, then it can work with red hat 9, you can check cisco web site and find the true!

Talking Mandrake 9.2 Cisco 350

I finally got my Cisco350 to run.

I read postings that there was problems with the kernel version that RH (I think it was RH ver.9) implemented with this release. Reviewing even more posting did not lead to the resolve, probably because it was cake for you guru's and they did not think it needed explanation a rebooter like me

Anyhow, via google, a posting stated that the kernel that Mandrake 9.2 (2.4.22), used had a patch to the airo drivers (I can be mistaken here, but this seemed to work for me). I installed Mandrake and dumped RH .

On my new install, (once I got the darn xwindows working) I used the configuration GUI (Mandrake Control Center) and was able to put in my WEP key and activate the card. I have created profiles for home and work, though I have only had one day of testing in each environment and usually have to bring up the MCC to make the change.

I am still having issues with re-initiating the service via [root@localhost]# dhclient wifi0 (which is an alias for eth1-also the Cisco card)... regardless the GUI worked like a charm.

Summary: Gui worked for me under Mandrake, manual did not, RH9 made me give up...I will keep searching to see where the heck I am going wrong concerning the dhclient and ifconfig...there was an error that it 'could not find the configuration file' <dunno>

***A bit more my env.
Dell Latitude C800 1gig 512 ram 32meg ATI Mobility card (I have seen postings on the ATI card not working, and I finally got mine going through XFdrake, will post that info elsewhere if desired; but this was inherent with a little trial and error).

BTW: I am running the latest Firmware for the Cisco card

Hope this helps
