3CRSHPW796 refuses to work, iwconfig not setting stuff

I've been trying to get this Atmel 8211 powered card to work forever now. Yes, I've seen http://www.espina.info/papers/officeconnect/ and I've followed their steps exactly on a fresh install and it's never worked. Is there some little detail that I'm missing? I've tried with RedHat 9 and Slackware 10 and I just can't get this thing to work. Is there some firmware stuff that I'm missing or something? I just can't figure out why it doesn't work. The module patches, compiles, and loads fine but everytime I run iwconfig and set things like essid right after that when I run iwconfig to view the settings they haven't changed. Anyone have any ideas at all?

It is an adm8211, and more info can be found in the thread about the adm8211 driver on 2.6.

Of course not. The standard driver provided by admtek does not include the office connect's PCI ID, and normally won't recognize the device as an adm8211 card. There is a patch that adds the PCI ID and makes it work. You can also try the GPL driver, which has the office connect's PCI ID and has been reported to work successfully. In any case, the other thread I mentioned contains more info about the GPL driver if you're interested.
