virtualbox - files reverting in clones

I am making some disposable BSD clones for browsing to surveillance oriented mega-corporate sites when necessary. It has not been easy but it has been rewarding.

My latest obstacle is that once I have my environment set up just right with secure browsers, I make a clone of this clone. The plan is to use this clone one time then erase it, make a new clone every time.

Trouble is, for firefox to run stably I have to adjust a blah.conf file for reasons.

So in my non-disposable clone, I make the change to the file as root, save, then make a clone of this one.

Every time it reverts to what it was before. The idea is that with the new clone I don't have to change any configs I just open a browser and go.

Why is this file reverting?

env: Virtualbox 4, FreeBSD

Strangely, after I restarted the second time, the changes were set.

It would be nice to understand why this behavior is so but if i have to restart clones an extra time, fine I guess.
