Implementing a 2 system infrastructure

I have a project in mind whereby I want to run two computers off the same (shared) Linux distribution.

I will have the actual Linux distribution installed on one computer but would like to have the other computer booting off the main computer over a wifi network. So the computer with the installed distribution will be an OS server both for itself and the other machine.

An interactive Hypervisor/KVM if you will.

What's the best way of going about setting up such a system?

The reason for doing this is to model an exercise in administering a Linux infrastructure. I don't wish to have to install maintain two separate Linux distributions on each device.

I would be grateful for any advice or thoughts.

Thanks for replying.

Yes Qubes is an Application centric VM (AppVM) with the mantra of being "a reasonably secure OS". The framework itself runs on Linux.

What I have in mind is something a little different. I'm more interested in essentially a Type 1 Hypervisor which will allow me to use one OS over a number of different physical hardware devices.

I guess 2x.com was bought out by parallels.

You can already use any of a few ways to rdp. You can also pxe boot from this server to clients. Everything from LTSP to running Knoppix in terminal server would do.

I would like to modify the requirements somewhat.

I would like to use the hardware devices as paravirtualised servers mutually interacting with each other over a local wifi network. This means I'm looking at an abstract system which is able to harness the hardware resources of both devices. But at the same time, I would like to access the guts of the system through either device.

I've been looking at using the Xen hypervisor.

The entire point of the exercise is to have only one OS (Linux distro) running, together with all the facilities of sharing the same set of system and user configuration files along with sharing user data. An easier approach might be to just set up two distinct distros on each device and then use NFS to share files in a lively manner. But I wish to avoid having to maintain two distinct distros in the first place.

I'm actually curious if it's really necessary to virtualise the set up that I have in mind here.

I installed Xen as a type-1 Hypervisor with Linux running on the main machine as Dom-0. I've noticed that there is a minute bit of latency. But anyway, I have a second device which I would like to pool in the hardware resources of that metal. How can I go about doing it through Xen?

If this the wrong way of going about this problem, what's the best way of setting up an infrastructure? Albeit a system of two metals infrastructure.

Thanks.
