yum install PHP: yum tries to install duplicate httpd

I installed apache 2.0 from scratch onto my Fedora Core 9 server. I now want to install PHP. I'm lazy by nature, so just want to try 'yum install php'. However, yum wants me to say "Y" to the "Installing for depencies" question, which includes httpd. httpd is already installed!

How can I get yum to see my /usr/local/apache2 installation while installing php?

Is there any reason you installed Apache from scratch? That's not being lazy, and the rpm DB (underlying yum) won't see it.
Simplest is to save a copy of the httpd.conf files (if you've customised them), then remove the hand-built Apache and let yum replace it.
