Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds...

I'm quite new to linux and I'm having a problem I can't solve. Already tried a lot of things, but still no solution.

Linux got stuck a while ago, and because I couldn't figure out anything else to do, I pushed the power-button for 5 seconds, so it immediatly shuts down... After that, when trying to start up, I got the following:

"Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem."

Details:

You lost GNU TLS*. You need to reinstall it. If you don't know how, you need to tell us what distribution of Linux you have so we can tell you.

* That may not be all that broke, but it's a start.

What do you mean with "what distribution of Linux you have" ?

I got linux via a friend, first it was kubuntu 7 (or so), but he switched it to ubuntu (without reinstalling)

I think it must be Debian, if that is what you mean...?

Yes, what flavor of Linux are you running. Debian? Ubuntu? Fedora? Slackware?

The process for Debian or Ubuntu is almost the same. Can you find Synaptic (Package Manager) in the menu and get libgnutls13 reinstalled?

I can't even load ubuntu anymore... the most far I get is the login-screen. After that, he tells me the session only lasted less than 10 seconds...

I already tried a lot of things in a failsafe terminal, but none of them fixed my problem... can I reinstall this GNU TLS* in a failsafe terminal?

When I try to start failsafe gnome, it also gives the error that my session only lasted ...

*slaps forehead* I forgot you can't even log in.

If you can get to a root prompt (maybe this failsafe terminal thing), try: apt-get install libgnutls13

I'm able to open synaptic from the terminal, but I can't install/reinstall anything...

The 'apt-get install libgnutls13' was ok, now it seems that 'cupsys-bsd' is broken...

When I try apt-get install cupsys-bsd he says:

"You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
cupsys-bsd: Depends: cupsys-client (=1.3.2-1ubuntu7.7) but 1.3.2-1ubuntu7.6 is to be installed"

When I do this (apt-get -f install) I get the folowwing:

"E: Could not open lock file /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (2 No such file or directory)
E: Unable to lock the download directory"

You don't seem to be running it as root. Use either su or sudo to do so; have you used either before?

Yes, I always do... but there seem to be a lot of 'dependency problems'...

I think I'll just reinstall the whole thing... will lose a few documents, but at least it will work again.

At least one of the elements on the path to /home/zac/.Xsession does not exist or you do not have permission to write.

(re)create the path and fix the permissions.

mkdir -p /home/zac
touch /home/zac/.Xsession
chown -R zac /home/zac
chmod 755 /home /home/zac
chmod 744 /home/zac/.Xsession
