XvMC enabled by default? How to determine if vid card hardware is functioning?

I was expecting the CPU usage to go down with/without XVMC enabled for my GeForce4 mx 440, and I can't see any difference at all. With mplayer, I use the " -vo XVMC " and ' top ' doesn't show any difference at all than if I do not use the XVMC switch.
This originated from trying to lesson CPU usage, taking advantage of the hardware support on the video card while inside mythtv, but the same goes with that too. Enable XVMC support/ disable XVMC, try various 'nvidia' drivers, ...no difference. Playback from previously captured bt878 video shows around 30% cpu usage with/without the XVMC enabled (Vid card is currently @ 4x-AGP b/c of MB).
Is there anyway to determine if the hardware on the Video card is doing the decoding versus the CPU?
