Question xv problems with ATI Radeon M6

I cannot get MPlayer, Ogle or Xine to work with xv - I just get a blank screen although sound is fine. Ogle djust dies. The x11 and vesa drivers work fine with MPlayer.
My setup is an HP Omnibook 6100 with Radeon Mobility M6 and Redhat 9. There are no errors in my XFree log file, but dga is commented out).

MPlayer output:
Opening video decoder: [mpegpes] MPEG 1/2 Video passthrough
Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vop scale...
Opening video filter: [scale]
The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec.
VDecoder init failed

Any suggestions? What other info do you need? TIA.
