Has anyone experienced the eq sliders in XMMS having no effect?

This is under a Debian 'sid' install running KDE 3.2.1 and using arts for sound with a Hercules Game theater XP. Sound plays excellently but I'd really like an eq plugin to take care of some peaks in my craptastic speakers....

Tried turning the 'on' button on... tried saving presets, the gain slider won't work either...

Tried searching xmms.org but their FAQ has nothing and the search function here sure didn't seem to have anything dealing with the EQ function...

Is it possibly because I'm running the unstable debian distribution?

Although I've never had a problem like this, I'm woundering if you havent tried Dl'ing the source Tarball from the XMMS website and recompiling it? I've had all kind of weird glitches in XMMS throughout my years with Linux (Red Hat mostly - go figure=) but everytime I get the source, compile and install it works like a charm.
