Gnome theme problems -- buttons, sliders, etc.
I'm trying to install the panther-gtk-default-0.3 theme in my Gnome-2.2.2.0-1mdk on Mndrake 9.1, but I'm having problems. The backgrounds and icons change to the theme's style, but the style doesn't apply correctly to sliders and most buttons (drop-downs, radio buttons, etc.). Can you help me figure out why?
I think I'm doing everything correctly, but I'm not sure. Clearly I must be missing something because it isn't working. Please check my logic here...
Background info: I'm using Mandrake 9.1 on a 350MHz/256 MB RAM system. I'm running Linux in traditional Chinese.
First, I thought it might be a problem with the theme itself or how I was installing it, but it installed perfectly on another Mandrake 9.1 system at work. It looked so cool, I had to have it at home. I made sure to install the Panther-Metacity theme, too, and I also tried the expose-gtk version. None worked.
Second, I thought it might be a problem with how I was installing themes in general, but I tried some other themes (Aquativo1.5, AquaX and gnuAquaSE) and they all installed the sliders and buttons pretty much completely. Panther GTK, H20 and Yattacier didn't install correctly, though.
Next, I tried checking around here. I found a thread that mentioned installing the current version of gnome-themes; I did this, logged out of Gnome and logged back in, but nothing changed. Another thread said to delete mandrakegalaxy from Main menu>Configuration>GNOME> Advanced>Sessions>Current Session; I did this, but again, nothing changed. However, a poster on that thread mentioned "putting a different theme in ~/.gtkrc and ~/.gtkrc-2.0" -- what does this mean, and where are these files? I didn't see them anywhere in my home directory, and a search of my HD showed nothing.
Could it be memory? Does Gnome automatically disable certain bits of eye candy if there isn't enough RAM? Or could it be the Chinese (my machine at work is in English)? That kind of taps out my guesses. What am I missing? As usual, I assume it's something obvious, but I don't know what.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to say what I've already done and hopefully save some headaches further down the line

Theme Preferences, then select Theme Details then you can pick window borders, controls, and icons...

Thank you, but unfortunately, I knew that already. I hate to say it, stingx, but -- please don't post answers like the one you gave. It makes it less likely that I'll get answers to my questions, because now many people will see that this thread has a reply and assume that my question has been answered.
Can anyone give me a more in-depth answer? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I didn't mean that you shouldn't give help. I still thank you for trying. However, your answer made it unlikely that I'll get an answer to my questions. I probably should've been more specific and said that I'd tried both the main Themes window and the Details window. I'm sorry if I wasn't specific enough. I was getting pretty long-winded already, though, and I thought that all my other attempts made it pretty clear that I had tried the Details window, too.
Please don't be offended. I really do thank you for replying. Unfortunately, though, your answer really did make it unlikely that I'd get the answer I need. I think moderators elsewhere on this board have said as much.
All that being said, I finally solved it. As someone on yet another thread suggested, I removed Mandrake Galaxy altogether via the RPM uninstaller. Mandrake apparently hardwires the sliders, icons, general widgets, etc. into the Galaxy theme. I'm not sure how they do this, but it seems like it might be in the various .gtkrc and .gtkrc-2.0 files laying around; most of these consist almost entirely of the line
Code:
include "/usr/share/themes/Galaxy/gtk-2.0/gtkrc".
Anyway, I removed the Mandrake Galaxy theme and now things are working pretty well.
Not perfectly, though -- now the sliders, icons, buttons, etc. within Firebird don't show up right. Argh! But the sliders show up in all the main interface windows, so I'm happy.
And again, stingx, thank you for trying to help. Seriously.
