Is there a third party program (or an option in xfce) to creat icons on the Desktop?

Well, you could use nautilus... but then you'd basically be running GNOME (you've already got its panel running, so I hear :P)
Might want to look at DFM, ROX, fbDesk, or iDesk (I'd recommend iDesk) instead for the icons.

Yes, that would be basically running gnome... Don't want that . I was under the impression that fbDesk was for flux' :

I can't seem to install Idesk, when running the 'make' command I get the error 'make: *** [Desk.o] Error 1'
Do you know why this is?
