Xemacs problem

I'm currently running Fedora Core 4 and am having problems getting Xemacs to execute properly. It is installed properly and will open up inside the terminal just fine, but when I attempt to do the following:

Code:
# xemacs documentName &
it merely starts running it in the background, never opening up a separate window. My server is an X-Server and the external windows do work on gedit (another text editor) so it is beyond me why this is not working...any help would be much appreciated.

1) Run "xterm &" just to be sure it is opening up new X windows correctly. (I'm assuming it is because of what you said about gedit but xterm being a simple utility is always a good test of X Windows.)

2) Assuming above works try running your Xemacs WITHOUT the ampersand ("&") to see if it gives you any diagnostic or error output on your screen.

3) Can't resist saying: Use vim instead - emacs is something I always tell developers they can't have - the main reason they usually give for wanting it is multiple windows but given that you have X windows that benefit is specious. Vim has a Gvim for GUI stuff.

I'd have no problems using vim if i could somehow get relatively the same interface (or if i could learn the commands) to use the Mozart programming language inside of it.

We are required at my school to program in mozart ( http://www.mozart-oz.org/ ) and I don't know how to compile under any other window other than xemacs (it has a nice pull down menu that enables us to compile specific parts of the code at one time).

Any help?

Did you try what I wrote in 1 and 2? What were the results?

The "xterm" command opens up another terminal window (as expected)

The "xemacs" command opens up an intro to xemacs page (inside the window) with a list of help functions and such...no errors reported
