David_84,
I would really like to know exactly what video card you have. What model is it, and which manufacturer made it? I would be curious to get this kind of information from anyone having problems, and also from people that have it working correctly. Maybe we can compare such results and build a list of working and non-working X1950 cards, with the working solutions if it does work, so that others will not have to go through the same torture as us. This is the -exact- card I have:

I'd also like to know what you get when you run fglrxinfo from a console window in X. Example:

bass@Drake:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1 Mesa 7.0.3-rc2)
Hi Ciphered

david@davids-pc:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1950 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7873 Release

In a beginning also I've problems with fglrxinfo on having seen that the drivers were MESA, and I did according to the guide (I sweat apt-get remove xserver-xgl), but he was saying to myself that it was not installed and that it was not going to be eliminated....

My video card it's an ATI SAPPHIRE X1950PRO 512MB AGP (http://www.sapphiretech.com/ss/produ...gpid=168&grp=3)

Now, i want to reinstall ubuntu again because isn't working good.
Ciphered, if you want anymore (logs, xorg. etc...) tell me and I'll post it!

Bye!!

Does this have to do with your video card? or is it unrelated?

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu. I've installed software from source before, but that was with ./configure, make, make install. How do I do this with apt-get and the Ubuntu sources?

I spent a good amount of time on google to figure out how to properly make such an upgrade without breaking my system but have not come up with an answer. I tested several times to upgrade the X server using intrepid packages on Hardy in a virtual machine, but it always broke the system to the point where I could no longer get X to start.

Thanks

On having initiated I have black screen during a few seconds and later it enters to the desktop, or often the desktop goes out for me by half and I have to wait that it loaded.
Later all good goes, compiz works perfectly.
What happens is that I do not know if to reinstall ubuntu ... and if later it me does not work?
At the moment I do not want to risk.

To compile something on *buntu, you need to get all the required things first and even remove some other packages. This can be done with apt-get

#sudo apt-get build-dep <package>

(it will get the latest in *buntu sources)

The other way may be via the test repositories.

You can compile them automatically to deb with

#sudo apt-get --compile source <package>

See the documentation in the Debian site too.

Best

Thank you for the explanation,

I've added the intrepid repositories to my sources, to gain access to the most recent xorg-server source package.

#sudo apt-get build-dep xorg-server
#sudo apt-get --compile source xorg-server

Worked like a charm, so I used gdebi to install the new packages and satisfy dependencies. When I restarted X, it came back up but it won't accept any keyboard or mouse input. CTRL-ALT-DEL still works so I can reboot to recovery mode, but all other input does not, and the mouse cursor is unmovable.

Edit: CTRL-ALT-F1 etc. works, and the keyboard works on the non-graphical login prompts. CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE does not work.

I will back the virtual machine to an earlier state and and try a few more things to see if I can fix this. If I can get it to work, then I will apply the same process on the real system and test the ATi drivers.

Any suggestions to get this working?

I just compiled and installed the intrepid xserver-xorg-input-keyboard and -mouse source packages from recovery mode.

#apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-input-keyboard
#apt-get --compile source xserver-xorg-input-keyboard
#apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-input-mouse
#apt-get --compile source xserver-xorg-input-mouse
#dpkg -i xserver-xorg-input-kbd*.deb
#dpkg -i xserver-xorg-input-mouse*.deb

When I went back to the upgraded X server, I still could not use the mouse or type.

After some searching, followed the same process for xserver-xorg-input-evdev but still no go.

(II) Cannot locate a core pointer device.
(II) Cannot locate a core keyboard device.

Edit: Problem solved, the default xorg.conf file does not work with the newest xorg-server packages.

Added generic InputDevice sections to the configuration and it worked.

I've gone through the process on my real system now,

I can not get X to start with the proprietary fglrx driver. When I try to start the X server, the screen flickers several times and then nothing happens. This seems to be a different problem than I originally had with the older version of the X server. These are the configuration and log files. (See following posts, forum won't allow me to fit it all into one posting.)

If I comment out the fglrx driver line, the X server comes up on the open source radeon driver and works normally.

Quote:
(II) LoadModule: "fglrx"

(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so
dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so: undefined symbol: miZeroLineScreenIndex
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so
(II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (loader failed, 7)
