X11, Radeon stuck at 60 frames/sec

There are several threads with people stuck at 640x480. That's not my problem. In fact 640x480 doesn't sync. Only 1024x768 works, apparentlt because the card only produces a V rate of 60. The X-log shows proper detection of the card (ATI Radeon RV100 (7000/VE)using VESA driver) and the monitor (IBM P76) and it indicates it will try V rates of 85 but that doesn't happen. Other details: Slackware 11.0, 2.4.33.3, X11R6.9, AMD Athlon64.
The config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) doesn't mention specific sync rates so I can't seem to control them there. I have used zgv (using svgalib) to get different resolutions but always at V refresh of 60. What else can I do?

Don't know what you've tried, but I use these steps when setting up X.
Code:
# cd /etc/X11
# mv xorg.conf xorg.conf-BAK
# xorgcfg -textmode
Enter your hardware settings, then save to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# vi xorg.conf
Modify file if needed
If these steps don't help, then post your xorg.conf file so we can see.

Okay, that is better. I can now switch modes using the cntl-alt-+ combo. However, the screens are too high, the top half or so is off screen and the monitor cannot compensate. Where is the control for that?

And thanks, this is a big step forward.

The problem is this:
Code:
(ATI Radeon RV100 (7000/VE)using VESA driver)
X is using the VESA driver and that driver is pretty limited. Your xorg.conf should reflect something like:

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "ATI Rage 128"
        Driver "ati"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
The Identifier and de BusID are not relevant, leave them as is on your system, but Driver "ati" is important.

It's seems to be working.

The xorg conf routine set the driver to "ati" apparently by probing or reading the startup params. When I restarted X the frame was in the right place. All seems well, at least pending more tesing. Thanks.
