Yeah (CTRL-ALT-F7), you can see if X is running like this:

ps ax|grep X
1588 ? R 5:12 X :0

if so, CTRL-ALT-F7
if not, rm /tmp/.X0-lock

Have you already started one x session? If so, they need to give permission by commanding:
Code:
[phil@uilleann phil]$ xhost +local:
non-network local connections being added to access control list
[phil@uilleann phil]$
Then root must
Code:
[root@uilleann root]# export DISPLAY=:0.0
[root@uilleann root]#
Now startx should work.
If an x session is not already running, then remove the stale lock file mentioned in the error message.

I don't get it.

What' is the problem? X is running.

The 'linux grahpic screen' IS X.
If you want to stop X do:

init 3

Do you only want to run X and not Gnome/KDE? (These run on top of X...)
