what type of file is it and why do you think you need wine ? run the file command on the file and copy-paste the output in your response.

have you tried open-office ?

can you please open a terminal and type in file followed by the filename in question so that we can make sure it is indeed a ms-word file ?

Well, wine is, for lack of a better term, a windows emulator. If all you have is a Microsoft Word document...that's not a program, so naturally it won't 'run'.

Install and/or use either openoffice or Libreoffice (you probably already have them). You can easily open up Word documents in that.

To expand on what TBOne said, you would not use wine to open the file. You would use wine to run Microsoft Word so that you could open the file with Word.

LibreOffice is a better option, and one that is native to Linux.

This is still not clear. Is the file a file created by MS Word (i.e. a .doc or .docx file)? or is it the actual MS Word program (a file whose name ends in .exe)?
Would you kindly post the complete filename of the file you're trying to open.

For the second time, what is the complete file name including the extension of the file you loaded?
Libreoffice can read most MSWord files.

Thanks. You do not need to use wine. Libreoffice (Swriter) can open .docx files. What version of Libreoffice are you running? Are you sure your .docx file is not corrupted?

I used a new disc for this file .it runs on windows.I am not doubting your knowledge, all I can do is download a file to a new disc and try again. The program is Linux mint which I loaded onto a formatted hard drive 2-3 days ago.

a microsoft .docx file WILL NOT "RUN", NOT even on windows !!!
it is NOT a program to be ran
it is a document file formatted in the windows office format

You READ !!!!! it
in a word processor
on Windows that is MS's MS "office 365 "
or on windows and Mac and Linux
OpenOffice or LibreOffice

Quote:
The program is Linux mint which
there is NO program called "linux mint"

there is a COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEM called "linux mint"
just like there is a computer operating system called "Windows 7 "
windows 7 is NOT a program to be "ran"

nor is a linux based Operating system .

Linux Mint is NOT a 'program'..it is an operating system. A .docx file can easily be opened with Libreoffice...run it, click File->Open, and select it. That's it...I do it many times a day, as do lots of other people. We can't tell you anything more than that.

Microsoft Office will not work well (if at all), under Wine, and frankly, there is NO NEED for it. Libreoffice does 99% of what MS Office does.

AGAIN: that file is NOT A PROGRAM. It does NOT 'run'...what you are doing in Windows is clicking the file, which then runs the program associated with it. Loading Wine will not change that...it still won't be a program, it still won't run.
