i have have a quick question to ask about WINE. I installed the 20040505 rpm of FC1 on my FC2. i down loaded the source code and compiled it all. What i want to know is " should i uninstall the rpm or leave it ?, or will the source code overide it and work ok ?
Well, the 'make install' will probably overwrite all the stuff from the rpm, but your rpm manager might get confused if it thinks a non-existent version of wine is still installed. Besides, it can't hurt to uninstall the rpm. Uninstalling rpms almost never touches your config files.
I can't say for sure that compiling it and installing over the RPM would mess it up, but I would uninstall the RPM first. It's always best to do this. After all, what could you lose? Your compilation will work just as well, if not better, than the precompiled program.
You should be able to go into the source directory and do "make uninstall". This command works for just about any program that you do "./configure", "make", and "make install" for (Wine provides its own script to do this for you, but you can manually enter these commands if you like).

I have just manually deleted the directory. What will happen? Some files in other directory not removed? The consequence?
I'm assuming you deleted the directory that represents "C:" in Wine. This won't uninstall the whole thing by any means. I know that several binaries are located in either /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin, and I would be surprised if Wine doesn't put files in other directories like /usr/lib. You should always uninstall using "make uninstall," but I don't think anything will stop you from doing that if you've already deleted the "C:" directory.
