wine optimization for games

I've been trying to get Total Annihilation working at optimal speed in Wine. It runs correctly, but a little slow right now and I am wondering what I can do to speed it up. I can set it up for full screen, does this mean that it is rendering directly to the screen? If not, how is it possible?

If you can run full screen from a terminal you could shut down all your WM/DE stuff which should increase performance a bit.

I tried running it in straight X, but it didn't seem to help performance.

Maybe it's just not 100% because it's running through wine, maybe cedega would work better if you don't mind paying. Otherwise I guess you could try hacking it yourself if you're up to it.
