I tried installing wine-20030813 from source on a Mandrake 10 box. After I entered ./tools/wineinstall it was going fine until I got this error:

Just out of curiosity, why are you using a wine build that's almost a year old? Try a newer build, and see if that fixes it.

You may also want to try and install with the binaries they have available on their download page for whatever distro you are using.
