Hi guys,
im installing wine so i can use msn messenger and chat to my friends who all use it since i cant convince them to change over to yahoo (which actually has a unix/linux messenger client
and ive installed it via rpm's and followed all instructions, but when i try to run it i get the following error message
wine: chdir to /tmp/.wine-chris/server-302-8b66b : No such file or directory
whats goin wrong ??? any1 else had this problem ???
Hmmm. You should not really use Wine to use such simple program. There's always an alternative program for Linux. Wine is for crucial programs and games. And even so, I don't like wine either.
If you are planning to simply use MSN, you would like to use Gaim. I believe Gaim is part of your RedHat Distribution. Gaim is a program that can simulate ICQ, MSN, AOL and etc.
If you have Gaim installed ( to check if you have, type "gaim" at the console, it should also have an entry of gaim into " >>programs >> internet ").
If you don't have, I would recomend you to install these packages from your CD's. If you don't have much experience with Linux is not good idea to download it from the net due dependencies issues.
Well, if everything is fine and you have gaim, do like this to use your MSN account on it:
Run Gaim and click in >> plugins >> load >> libmsn.so
Done with it, it's time to create a new account. Click in:
"accounts >> add
There you should change the tab "protocols" to MSN. From there you should be able to get your way to make it work, typing your screen name and password, just like you did with the real MSN.
KDE has KMess as a just MSN clone, without the official smilies/emoticons.
There's also aMSN, and whole heap of other MSN or multi protocol chat/IM apps out there (check Sourceforge)
Might have to open the MSN ports in your firewall (IPTables/IPChains) to allow chatting, and checking hotmail etc.
i have this problem too. i install wine20030508 in rh9. then, when i prompt # wine. it yields something like this: wine: chdir to /tmp/.wine-yenonn/server-342-1c1c2: No such file or directory
what's wrong about this? i have done the same thing on rh8. i have no error on rh8. wine runs perfectly? pls clarify!!!!!!!
actually, i wan to install microsoft outlook 2000, such that i can use it to receiving and sending mails. why i choose to do this, bcz in my company, there are a lot bunch of ppl are using m$ products, including the mail server and the rest of the servers and there is the only one, that's it me, using rh linux. and i dun afford to buy a ximian connector. that's why i choose to use wine to run my outlook. i have problem in installing the microsoft outlook. it halts in the half way of the installation. y? i have no idea. does anybody manage to do this works, just using wine from www.winehq.com. ok, i dont afford to buy crossover office. i know it works! but i just wanna to make sure whether or not i can make my microsoft outlook works by just using wine only. thanks

ximian connector and crossover office are using M$ APIs making ximian to utilize special exchange services/install MS office programs.
It u just need to get email and ur network email server can uses pop/imap, u can make use of ximian/kmail/mozilla mail w/o the commercial plugins.
i'm also stuck with MS outlook when i'm at the office. our MS exchange is set up in a way only MS outlook can be used (ximian connecter has limitations).
if u want wine to work in rh9 u have to type this before u can run it:
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
youll have to run it every time u logout or restart so id ser it to an alias. hope that helps. before you use wine, always look for a linux alternative, wine can be a pain.
some silly question here.
i am using wine20030408, and i have installed microsoft office 2000. i think it is alright bcz all the way there arent any complaining message boxes. my question is that i dont know how to run the winword, excel and outlook after the installation. pls consult thanks!
u can try using the CrossOver demo - i got it working under RHL9, installed MS office 2000. it automatically created the launchers in my gnome main menu.
and, guess what - the demo is good for 30 days but u can uninstall it (if the 30 days are over) and re-install it (to get another 30 days). just backup your .cxoffice directory in between.
