Why NFS/NIS servers are not supported in Fedora core 6,7,8 and 9?
Hi friends,
We were using centralised logins using NIS/NFS server on Fedora Core 5. It is working well with both server and clients in Fedora Core 5. For new clients (with Core 2 duo configuration) core 5 had driver problems. So we installed core 7 and 9 on some of them with sucess, but could not make them clients of core 5 server.
I think that NIS/NFS is not supported in new versions of Fedora. Is it true? Please help!!!
Regards,
Prakasha

The newer versions probably don't work with the older version on FC5. It's usually best practice to keep machines the same, so if you're upgrading a handful, you might as well plan to upgrade all of them. Mixing versions can be a nightmare keeping up with updates, patches and such.

I've got a Fedora 9 web server that acts as an NFS server and also as an NFS client (to a RHAS 4 server). So I know NFS works both ways.
I'm not a big fan of NIS, but that stuff hasn't changed since the 80s. Stuff that doesn't change is hard to break. The ypbind and yp-tools rpms exist for Fedora 9. I believe they have a purpose.
Why do you think NFS and NIS are not supported? What problems are you seeing?
