I am very new to linux but would like to try it out.
I have three small drives on my computer. one I set aside for my new linux program SUSE. I have bought a setup program from my local news agent. It has 5 discs.
I started the install and everything is fine until I get to "accept installation".
ERR..3 Package pin 0.35.10 fails integrity check.
I retry.
a red screen saying an error has occured during installation.
(There is still no mention of where would I like the program to go).
I have tried three times but always the same result.
My first guess given the description would be a) faulty media or
b) problems with the CD-ROM drive. Do the media have any visible
scratches? Can you read them on a different machine?
G'Day Tink,
Thanks for your reply. The CD seems to run fine with other CD's. The disks are brand new out of the packet. I couldn't see any scratches or marks.
integrity check fail error means there is something wrong with your media, it could be your media from which you are installing your distribution or your HDD itself,,so try installing your distribution on a different HDD on the same machine,.
if same problem comes again then tell us about your machine config and the version of your distribution along with the kernel no.
Sounds like something on that CD may be bad. Did you try a mediacheck. If that passes maybe drive related.
+1
Since the drive is apparently working under Windows, the obvious thing to check is the media. You could take it back wherever you bought it, TRY to get your money back telling them the CD's are defective, and download OpenSuse(free). Its a big download obviously, so you'll probably want a high speed connection. Burn the ISO files to CDR or DVDR, and you're off. Suse was a pretty good distro last time I tried it(couple years ago). The good thing is, if you install OpenSuse and don't like it, you're out about $0, and can try any number of other Free Linux distros(Ubuntu, Slack, Fedora, and the list goes on)
I would say you are right. I will start again. I don't mind downloading a program. One thing that I can't understand is why are there so many of them? Do they all do something different? Where could I read what they are all for and which one would suit me best?
Thanks
GrahamB

There are even more of them than you think---according to Distrowatch, over 350...
Think of The Linux kernel + the various GNU utilities as a giant erector set. You can use this to make desktop distros, live CDs, embedded Linux, server Linux, etc.
If you stay in the top ten or so on the Distrowatch hit list, you'll be less confused.

Right here at LQ.org in XavierP's UltraMegaSuper "Which Distro" Thread would be a good start. All you'll ever get asking that question is a bunch of people's opinions...and you know what they way about opinions. After you wade through that thread, you can head over to DistroWatch.com. As Pixellany stated, stick to the top 10 or so.
I am having similar issues with installing. I'm using CentOS 4 I have the CDs from school and it boots fine but then it tells me it can't find the driver files on ANY of CDs. I have been working on this for a while now and I used to consider myself pretty quick with computers - days of 'trash 80' commadore, even ran a WWIV BBS. but this has whooped me! Something else - how do you get the ISO files extracted? I have a 'bootable' cd of centos 4.iso but it drops me to 'dr dos' prompt and I can't out without a hard reboot. AARRGGH! ok done with my rant while driving home. thanks in advance!
