It appears that file locations and names are veryOS-centric, hence my Firefox specific post here rather than on the specialized FedoraForums.org. Though I will eventually ask there if I must.
"userContent.css" is normally in a theme .xpi ( a java/xml archive )
but the default is in that folder ( mind you that that RANDOM is a 8 alphanumaric string "
on my SL 6.4 install ( rhel clone)
/home/"MY NAME"/.mozilla/firefox/????????.default-?????????????/chrome
a "DOT" file is a HIDDEN file or folder (like a windows system file)
on redhat based systems ( including fedora)
to see "hidden files" hit the
<control> + <h> buttons
or it is someplace in the gnome3 GUI
( i hate gnome3 with a passion and use KDE )
and ".mozilla" is a hidden "dot" folder
Are you aware that that web page is 4 years old and 4 years out of date !!!
HOWEVER!!!
installing the firefox add ons
"AdBlock plus"
and/or
"No-Script"
and/or
"Ghoestry"
will DO WONDERS
at stopping pop ups and advertising
i see maybe one ad per week
start with installing Add block plus
it is VERY easy to configure ( and you MUST DO THAT )
then install no-script" but READ UP ON USING IT !!!!!!!!!!
it is VERY complex and takes a bit of work to configure
and different web sites might need different settings

Thank you. Yes, I have used FF for about ten years, and previously under Windoze.
These new pop-ups seem to be from CSS and they became onerous while running mature configurations of BetterPrivacy, Adblock Plus and NoScript. NoScript died for me for its own weight, trying to be all things to all users. Ghostery blocks tracking cookies as I understand it.
The .css from that web page *is* simple and written a while ago. It does not appear to be effective where I have applied it. I have installed Stylish but haven't found a canned 'style' that does what I want it to.
I am a 65 y.o. user and not a web-developer (archly - grown up "scare quotes"), and I resent having to learn how to keep commercial content off my browser page displays when it should be a simple universal opt-out.
if you have a firefox theme installed ( and you are using that theme)
then that "cascading style sheet"( css) is in that theme's *.xpi"
" {73a6fe31-595d-460b-a920-fcc0f8843232}.xpi "
that one above is no-scripts file but a theme will have a name like that
it is in the "extensions" folder in the ?????????.default folder
and will be in the chrome folder in that xpi archive
but editing a theme is not really easy
try removing ant theme you are using
in FF tools/addons
and disable your theme and use the ff DEFAULT
and see if
/home/"MY NAME"/.mozilla/firefox/????????.default-?????????????/chrome/userContent.css "
you edited will work
