Unhappy Where's my compiler??

I have got RH7.2 up and running (thanks to all!).

Now I am trying to install the driver for my PCtel HSP56 modem.

I have the pctel-0.9.0 driver and am following the install instructions, one of the commands needs me to specify the location of my 'includes' - I have tried a few variants here but the configure command fails, complaining it can't find 'cc' in the PATH.

I presume cc is the compiler - where should it be and how can I install it if I haven't already??

TIA

GeeTee

you've presumably not got it. install gcc from your distro cd's with gnorpm or just "rpm -iv gcc....rpm" on a console. you'll presumably need all the associated libraries aswell. it'll tell you which ones to install. well, it should...

I have the 1st distro CD - just burnt it from the ISO file - but I guess gcc is on disk 2 and now I have no CD-Rs left and shops are shut!

I have the rpms and srpms on my Windows partition - is there anyway to mount that in linux so I can grab the files?

TIA

this is linux.. of course you can!

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/c
mount -o loop /mnt/c/enigma-2.iso /mnt/rh72-2

or something. check the mount manpage for info if you're not up on it yet. gcc is always gonna be on the first cd tho.

Talking

Finally working!

Installed gcc and its various dependencies (had to use rpm from the command line as Package Manager would not do it).

Had to relocate the modversions.h file - configure could not find it although it reported it was looking in the correct dir.

Had to edit the configure script to set the kernel version detection to a constant - error messages about having sub 2.4.0 kernel (actually 2.4.7-10).

Had to download and run fixscript on the two modules pctel.o and ptserial.o to resolve 'Unresolved Symbols' errors.

So here I am - 1st post from my first Linux install.

It would be easier if I knew anything at all about linux/unix!!

Thanks again - doubtless I'll be back with a new seemingly unsurmountable problem.

Regards
GeeTee
