Whats so special about qmail ?

Hello....

I have been keeping an eye on the requirements for a decent mail server program for linux....and one application that has been talked about so much ( of late) is 'qmail'....

I've just started to learn about configuring sendmail......So, I am quite keen to know, what makes qmail more popular? Why is it that many companies are looking for professionals who know how to set up and manage a qmail mail server... ( when we have many more like Postfix, exim...etc)

Regards,

amit

Qmail has a more modular design where differenc services run as different users. Since it does not run directly as root it is much more secure. I also like its speed, reliability and the option to interface with ldap.

There is lots of useful info in Life With Qmail.

Thanx for the info david_ross....however I've a small problem with one command when i try to set up the root password using the following commands

mysqladmin -u root password passwd

mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password passwd

This displays an error message "Could not connect to root@localhost" Using (Password:NO)

I have dns and apache working properly....my /etc/hosts has the loopback address entry too.....then why isnt the above command working?

Any ideas?

Regards,

amit

instead of using password use -p without any passwd
so ur command will look like this
mysqladmin -u root -p
then it will ask for ur password

and about qmail, the most striking feature of qmail is that,u can configure it to deliver the mails to user /home directories very easily (Mailbox)
(in case of sendmail, u need to recompile local mailer )

Hello sashhoney....Thanx for the info on qmail feature...

This is the output of the command that u have suggested, however, it doesnt work....

[root@ns root]# mysqladmin -u root -p
mysqladmin Ver 8.23 Distrib 3.23.54, for redhat-linux-gnu on i386
Copyright (C) 2000 MySQL AB & MySQL Finland AB & TCX DataKonsult AB
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. This is free software,
and you are welcome to modify and redistribute it under the GPL license

Administration program for the mysqld daemon.
Usage: mysqladmin [OPTIONS] command command....

-#, --debug=... Output debug log. Often this is 'd:t,filename`
-f, --force Don't ask for confirmation on drop database; with
multiple commands, continue even if an error occurs
-?, --help Display this help and exit
--character-sets-dir=...
Set the character set directory
-C, --compress Use compression in server/client protocol
-h, --host=# Connect to host
-p, --password[=...] Password to use when connecting to server
If password is not given it's asked from the tty
-P --port=... Port number to use for connection
-i, --sleep=sec Execute commands again and again with a sleep between
-r, --relative Show difference between current and previous values
when used with -i. Currently works only with
extended-status
-E, --vertical Print output vertically. Is similar to --relative,
but prints output vertically.
-s, --silent Silently exit if one can't connect to server
-S, --socket=... Socket file to use for connection
-u, --user=# User for login if not current user
-v, --verbose Write more information
-V, --version Output version information and exit
-w, --wait[=retries] Wait and retry if connection is down

...........truncated.......

And this is the output of the command

[root@ns root]# mysqladmin -u root password pcq
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)'

Now tell me what can be done......

Regards,

amit

Qmail is one of those apps that falls into the "love/hate" category. Once you get it running, it runs prettly well, but you have to plan your installation first. Personally, I don't really care to go hunting for patches to get the functionality and performance that is needed. I'd rather use something like sendmail or postfix that already has the needed functionality built in. Some people have started building packages with the common patches built in, but occasionally you still have to go patch hunting. Qmail also has some other quirks like having 'highly recommended" software such as ucspi and daemontools to broker connections and control the daemons.

A good site to look at is Life with Qmail if you want more information. It will get you through a basic install.
