Do you mean the nvidia driver from the nvidia website - http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...-8762-pkg1.run? If so, after you've downloaded it make it executable with chmod and run it directly (as root):
Code:
chmod u+x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run && ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run
The nvidia website says you can run it with the following, it's up to you:
Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run
Regardles, have a look at the docs on the nvidia site at http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...DME/index.html, it's well worth it.

what?

what card do you have now? if you have an nvidia card with the nvidia driver you probably wont have to change anything.
if you dont have an nvidia card with the working driver, or want to get the latest version for your new card, visit here. the instructions are on the link as well. after installation, read the readme file it installs as well for instructions on what to change in your X configuration file.

good luck

Question been there done that

Okay, let me try a different approach. I just downloaded the file and saved it to file:/home/wnewton/Doc...6_64-1.08762-pkg2.run.
Now do I change to init 3 before I run it. I think the mistake I made before was opening it with kwrite in runlevel 5 and it didn't like it. Won't I have to move the file to a x11 directory first?

press CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE to kill X, then run the file as root, as it says on the link i provided previously.
then see http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L...ection-02.html for how to change your X config file, use the vi editor. look for a brief intro of how to use it (editing and saving files) if you dont know how. then run 'startx' to bring the GUI back up.

you dont HAVE to... if you use the full path to the file, you can be anywhere and the computer will find it.. just run 'sh /home/wnewton/...' where ... is of course the rest of the path to the filename.

I couldn't have done it as easily without you.
I will be spending most of my time in the "newb" section
