Weird Problem with X. TV out only works on a second boot

Alright, I'm running Slackware 10, and i've got an ATI radeon 7000 (PCI) with TV out working with the devel tv out section of the GATOS drivers. Everything looks fine on the tv and monitor.

BUT, after turning the computer on, the first time that X runs, whether its from the startx command or if I set inittab to runlevel 4, the TV out will fail. It will just be a mesh of color on the tv screen. I then kill x, and upon starting it again, it looks perfectly fine.

What could possibly cause this problem? I've experimented with writing some scripts that startx, then kill it, then start it again, but it wastes some time, and I'm sure theres a better way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
