weird problem concernig ls --color=always

hello everybody
i just replaced gdm with xdm on my debian 3.0 installation and now running "ls --color=always" in an xterm window makes all such formerly coloured things look written white/bold (eg. directories formerly written blue occur now in bold white letters). i dont really know how to deal with that. does anyone have an idea how to make those formerly blue letters (or yellow, green - whatever) appear coloured again? when using ls less, there occur odd signs before and after the names of the files/directories ich make me believe that the esc-sequences are sent properly (to whatever).

thank you

ps: i removed whole gnome from my installation. perhaps i erased an important library or something like that though using apt to uninstall that?

try setting it to auto. ls --color=auto see if that works.

FYI: if you go to `user CP' -> `edit profile', there's a distro field. You can fill it out once and for all, and save yourself some typing and the risk of forgetting to mention your distro.

btw, if your box is for regular desktop use, I'd recommend running testing over stable any day of the week.
