Exclamation want to up grade kernel 2.4.20-8(RH9) to newr version


hi
i am using redhat linux 9 and kernel version is 2.4.20-8 and my system configuration is amd athlon xp with asus a7n8x vm/400 motherboard ram size is 256. i have downloaded the geforce 4mx display driver for linux but it canoot runs it shows a error message like kernel is not supproted so i want to upgrade my kernel i am new to linex please any one provide me the istructions . thanks in advace

you'll need to download a newer kernel source (see www.kernel.org for download mirrors) and compile it for your system. check this thread for compiling and installation instructions.

thanks for the reply. but i have one doubt is the step 7 is nessecery??? when i type it ask so many questions i have skiped it.if we avoid this step is there any problem ??? is there is any default option ?

step 7 seems to be one of the most important steps: configuring the kernel. you must specify everything that you need, and that are a lot of questions... if you run in graphics mode, maybe "make xconfig" is easier, but it won't pick up the 2.4 config, so you have to anwser every question. first time(s) kernel configuring may take some hours to get it right if you miss an option there's a chance some things won't work and you need to reconfigure...
