First as root do 'zypper ref; zypper ve' to make sure all dependencies are properly satisfied. If that doesn't help, install SMplayer and report back whether or not it works as expected. Is Packman shown in the output from 'zypper lr'? If not, enabling it and updating A/V packages to those it provides likely would solve the problem. Is libdvdcss2 installed? If not, install it.

I do updates via "sudo zypper up". There I lately get a message that I have to agree to some license agreement for "gstreamer-fluendo-mp3". I know that this has to do with vlc. So, today I deleted it. And the problems are gone...
(Your favorite expletive here). Oh, well. I'll mark this thread as solved. As an aside: No, I do not understand what really went wrong. *sigh*

Addendum: "vlc-codec-gstreamer" was installed twice (packman plus SUSE). Removing one made the colors brighter and "better". *sigh (again)*. And no, I don't understand this either.
