I'm running Mint 21.1 with Windows XP SP3 running in a VBox. Everything seems to be working smoothly, except I can't get the shared folders to work! I have created both folders (one in "/home/flexico/VirtualBox/Shared/" and the other at "C:\Documents and Settings\Flexico\My Documents\Shared") and restarted both the outer and inner OS's, but nothing worked. Also, WinXP (in VBox) doesn't see any USB device either; that's probably related.
Did you install guest additions?
Did you actually configure the VB share in VBoxManager or in the guests pull down menu?
If so you should be able to see the share in XP's file browser in the left window pane just like a real network share.
The same goes for a USB device. It has to be connected to the guest either in VBoxManager or the guests pull down menu. For USB 2+ you also need to install guests additions. A USB device can only be used by one OS at a time.
I have installed Win 7 in VirtualBox.
You have to install the guest additions. I think this shows up as a DVD drive or you have to manually mount it via the VB menu.
Next, in your Win XP, you need to right click the folder you want to share and enable sharing.
On your Linux Mint, you can mount that windows folder using SAMBA but I think you need to manually install SAMBA first.
I use Kubuntu and that is what I had to do.
I can give you screenshots if you want.
VB sharing is like but does not use samba. I have a Windows 10 guest but I assume it works the same. The host share is configured in VBoxManager or the guests pull down menu and the share pops up in XP's file browser's left pane under network. You can either browse by selecting the left pane or connect to it and assign a drive letter.
