vim: unhighlight

I just had a quick question for someone who is knowledgeable in VIM text editor. Every once in a while I will try to enter text and forget to hit "i" for insert first. Vim then goes and highlights a specific word throught the file. How do I take the highlight of it. It seems to do it even when I close VIM and then open it back up. Thanks for the help.

i'm not sure what is the "correct" way to do it. i just hit the / key to start a new search, and then instead of searching for something just add some gobbledygook and hit enter (e.g., fjkdfjldjifudsfj <enter>).

If you just want to turn off the highlighting without starting another search, use the command
