command man vim

reads:

Quote:
vim -O[N]
Open N windows side by side. When N is omitted, open one window for each file.
If I understood you right, it depends on how many files you want to open. Three files in three windows should be vim -O3.

Hi,

Did you try: :vs ?

That should insert an extra (vertical) window.

:vs worked thank you!

it splits one of them instead of creating a blank one but i can clear it by hitting "dd" a bunch of times.

:sp

Also, if you prefer a horizontal split--I find them easier to read than the side-by-side panes--you can use
Code:
:sp
Inserting a number between the colon and "sp" will give you a split N lines high.

i hate horizontal split it makes looking at code side by side a bit more difficult. but i tried the number with vs and that seems to give me a blank screen or i just do : o and a different name to start coding.

Yeah, horizontal split can take a filename argument too. Makes a great reference tool when several shell scripts interact.

Ah. I don't do any *real* coding; HTML and shell script is my code. Someday I want to learn some C and get a little more into Perl. For shell scripts, the horizontal split helps a lot.

Then again, I may change my mind if I ever get a widescreen monitor too. /me bookmarks the page in case he ever wins the lottery...
