VIM macros won't update

Hello. I have a favorite macro that I use to insert the date. For some odd reason, when I try to update the macro, it doesn't take. It will update for the current editing session, but doesn't save the results in vimrc. The next time I start up VIM, the macro is back to the old date. Right now, it's still stuck at 14 Nov 2011.

Does anyone know how to overwrite or update macros and make the changes stick?

Conversely, I'd like to save some macros unchanged forever. As Murphy's Law would have it, whenever I make a typing mistake that begins with a 'q', one of them gets wiped out and I have to reenter it. Any way to make macros stay?
