Update Samba Config Without Stopping Current Access
hey all,
i am in the process of setting up my main server (was windows 2000 server, but it sucked big time, as per all windows stuff), using RHEL5. i also have set up (and its in production) a RHEL4.5 machine that is basically just a file/proxy server. blah blah blah, long story, but i need to (at least hope there is a way of) update the samba configuration without user machines having a fit. i have about 150 winXP client machines, all using the file server constantly, opening and saving documents to it directly. so a simple "service smb restart" will cause errors (i know from past exp). so i need a way of updating the samba confi without stopping current access.
Actually, I've found that if you do incremental, minor changes to the smb.conf, and the daemon process reloads ever 60secs from the conf file, making changes as you go. Obviously large changes such as machine name may screw with window's tiny brain, but most settings are fine. This experience is on the Debian/Ubuntu series, anyhow.
thanks for the confirmation. i had suspicions that it would. i have just changed it from being a pdc to bdc, so i wonder if it will update itself, or i will need to remotely restart samba tonight?
