stopping mandrake update

I started mandrake update to download all of the updates, but I do not have time to wait on it finishing, I hit cancel , but the urpmi database still seems to be locked and it appears to be downloading continuously. Is there anyway to stop/cancel this update?

Yep, run kdesu ksysguard in a console, and then use Ksysguard to stop urpmi etc. Look at the processes running and decide which needs to go - urpmi should do it, so should eth0, or ppp if you are on dial-up. Select the process, then choose Kill.

you can always try the kill command.

I had the same problem...do a quick 'ps ax' on the command line and you should still see a mandrake update process running even though you canceled...kill that process (you might need to be root) and all should be fine.

Nope. From what I understand it Mandrake update and URPMI downloads everything first...and THEN installs.

If for some reason a download doesn't work (ie: say the 4th package out of 6 dependencies) it does not attempt the install.

So you should be ok...I've actually done this a few times last week when I was trying to download all the updates over a problematic connection.

When I tried to stop a Mandrake update, it totally ruined my update utility. I had to delete all the synthesis files, remove urpmi, and rpmdrake, then reinstall the packages and create new synthesis files using the software sources program. I don't know if you'll have to go through all that, but if it still doesn't work (or always returns a message that there is an invalid set of updates) you might.

Yea when I use to have dial-up connection, it would sometimes take atleast 5 or 6 times to get the updates, (I don't miss that) and then it would install.

Ctrl-Alt-Esc

This will give you a jolly roger. Put it on the header of the application you wish to kill, and hit enter. Be careful with it, if you put in on the KTaskbar, it will kill the bar.
