Uninstalling MySQL (not rpm)

How do I uninstall MySQL (source, not rpm)? I had problems with setting the root passwords and would like to start over fresh.

cd into your source folder and type the following:

$ make clean
$ make distclean
$ make uninstall

don't worry if it errors about 'no target' on any of the above commands.. it just means that the target isn't included in your makefile..

Sounds easy enough, but I can't find where make will work...

I downloaded the .tar.gz into /usr/local/src and moved the uncompressed folder from there to /usr/local/mysql. I then installed the db using /usr/local/mysql/scripts/mysql_install_db

Anywhere I try to run make clean, it returns "No rule to make target 'clean'. Stop.".

do it manually by first locate where all mysql files are by

locate mysql

then cd to where you seen mysql files and rm -fr filename or directoryname

it wll hardly takes 10 minutes to remove all traces of mysql from your box
