unable to sw-suspend

after I upgraded to kubuntu 8 on my laptop, I am unable to use software suspend (ACPI S3). when I try, the screen goes black, and keyboard is unresponsive. the power remains on, including the fan. the only way to get back in is to force a reboot.

edit:
after a few more tests, I find that the problem occurs at the end of the suspend procedure. I get to the point where I see "suspending consoles" then nothing. I can change to and between terminals 1-6, but when I try to go back to #7 (where X was), I get a black screen and the keyboard is dead.

according to what I find while looking around, the sleep should work. "cat /sys/power/state" returns "mem" and "disk", indicating that sleep is supported.
